1955 Ford F-100 — Project Completion
This 1955 F-100 was a regular customer's mid-project and someone else's dream that had stalled. The body was painted, the engine and transmission were sitting in the frame. But that's where the previous builder stopped. The wiring, the fuel delivery, the climate control, the glass, the steering. None of it had been touched. It was a beautiful shell waiting for someone to finish the job.
We took it the rest of the way.
From Shell to Driver
When a project like this lands at D&R Hot Rod Shop, we go through every system like we were starting from bare metal. The electrical was a complete rewire from scratch, every circuit terminated clean and routed where it belongs. We installed a full gauge package so the driver always knows what's happening under the hood. The fuel system ran fresh from tank to carburetor with new lines, new pickup, new plumbing, no shortcuts. The driveshaft that came in the truck didn't fit, so we cut and balanced a new one to spec.
Climate Control That Belongs
Anyone who's driven an old truck through an Ontario summer knows the cab turns into a convection oven. Our customer wanted real, modern comfort, not one of those under-dash afterthoughts from a catalog. We installed a Vintage Air Gen 5 SureFit system, built for the 1953–56 F-100 cab. It handles heat, defrost, and A/C with blend-air controls, and the condenser and compressor are sized for the truck. It tucks behind the dash where it belongs, and it blows cold enough that you forget you're sitting in a truck built during the Eisenhower administration.
Stance, Steering, and Showmanship
The front suspension got the treatment these trucks have deserved for decades: a Mustang II-style independent front clip, replacing the factory straight axle and leaf springs with modern geometry, coil springs, and rack-and-pinion steering. We paired it with a tilt steering column and a Lokar floor shifter, so the driver cockpit feels planted and intentional.
Out back, the rear axle was narrowed to tuck wide wheels under the bedsides without rubbing. This is one of those modifications you don't see until you walk around the truck and notice how the tires fill the fenders perfectly. It's subtle, but it makes the stance.
The Hood That Stops People
The feature that gets the most attention is the flip-forward hood. It's a catalogue part we installed. Instead of hinging at the rear like Ford intended, it lifts, pulls forward, and tilts open to expose the engine bay. We sorted the latch so one person can open and close it without a fight. The customer wanted something different, so that's what he got.
A Truck Worth Finishing
This truck is what we do best: taking someone's unfinished project and getting it across the finish line.
Got a stalled project, or a truck you bought that needs more than you expected? Bring it in. We've been there before, and we know how to finish it.
Build Highlights
- Front Suspension: Mustang II-style independent front clip. Replaces the factory straight axle with modern rack-and-pinion steering, coil springs, and improved geometry for a planted, confident ride that handles like a modern vehicle.
- Rear End: Narrowed rear axle. Reduces track width to tuck wide wheels and tires cleanly under the bedsides, giving the truck an aggressive, tucked stance without rubbing or clearance issues.
- A/C: Vintage Air Gen 5 SureFit climate control system. Complete heat, defrost, and air conditioning engineered specifically for the 1953–56 F-100 cab, with integrated electronic controls and blend-air temperature management that keeps the cabin comfortable in any weather.
- Steering: Tilt steering column with Lokar floor shifter. Adjustable column position puts the wheel exactly where the driver wants it, while the Lokar shifter delivers crisp, mechanical gear changes with a classic hot-rod feel.
- Flip-Forward Hood: Flip-forward hood kit, installed and dialed in-house. The hood lifts, pulls forward, and tilts open to expose the engine bay.
- Wiring: Complete rewire with full gauge package. Every circuit replaced from fuse block to terminal, routed clean and secured properly, with comprehensive instrumentation so nothing is left to guesswork.
- Glass & Seals: All new throughout. Fresh windshield, door glass, rear window, and every rubber seal replaced so the cab is quiet, weather-tight, and ready for daily driving.
- Fuel System: Complete system from tank to carburetor. New pickup, lines, filters, and connections, built from scratch to deliver reliable fuel delivery.
